Believe it or not, there is an actual Beijing saying that goes: “the best snacks in Beijing are Muslim; the best Muslim snacks are on Niujie.” Indeed, it holds true for anyone who loves beef chuan or other skewered meats. Known as ‘Beef Street’ in English, you can buy large pieces of mutton in fresh seasoning or covered in Arab spices such as cardamom, pepper, fennel and cinnamon. Over 200 Muslim and Chinese snacks are produced at Nuijie Snack Market, including stuffed rice dumplings, been jelly, sweet and sour plum juice, and different varieties of beef and mutton dishes.
The street is also known for its cultural significance as it holds the largest concentration of Muslims in Beijing. The beautiful architecture and rich atmosphere make it a worthwhile excursion.
